North Korea has successfully refloated a warship that capsized during a launch attempt, according to state-run news agency KCNA. The 5,000-tonne destroyer was reported to have “safely entered the water vertically” and been moored at the pier before being fully repaired.
The incident occurred just weeks after Pyongyang unveiled a similar warship in another part of the country, with Kim Jong Un calling it a “breakthrough” in modernizing North Korea’s navy. The failed launch drew harsh criticism from Kim, who described it as a “criminal act” that severely damaged the country’s dignity and pride.
At least four officials have been arrested over the incident, including Ri Hyong-son, deputy director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Munitions Industry Department. Their punishment is unclear, but analysts believe Kim’s response was aimed at protecting his image and reasserting his authority.
Experts say Kim’s regime is deeply invested in showcasing its military capabilities, and the failure may have hardened their resolve to push forward with development. The refloated warship will be fully repaired before a key meeting led by Kim, which top officials will attend.
