North Korea has launched a medium-range ballistic missile, its first since November 5, amid a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to South Korea. The test-launch occurred as the US, South Korea, and Japan strengthened their real-time information-sharing capabilities.
The missile was detected by South Korean military radar near Pyongyang, the capital, and flew towards the East Sea. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff has increased surveillance for additional launches and is sharing ballistic-missile data with the US and Japan.
Blinken condemned the test, calling it a “violation of multiple Security Council resolutions.” He expressed confidence that cooperation among the US, South Korea, and Japan will continue to deter North Korea’s provocations. Tokyo also condemned the launch, emphasizing the importance of unity in addressing the threat to regional peace.
The missile traveled approximately 684 miles before falling into the Sea of Japan outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone. No damage to vessels was reported. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed concern over North Korea’s advancements in missile technology, stressing the need for strengthened deterrence.
