North Korean forces deployed to fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine are facing severe losses, according to new Western intelligence assessments. About 4,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded, with the toll increasing rapidly. Britain’s defense ministry reported that as of mid-January, around 1,000 North Koreans had been killed and 3,000 more injured in combat against Ukrainian forces. This represents nearly a third of their deployment. Pentagon spokespersons confirmed that losses included soldiers at all ranks, including some senior officers. Analysts suggest the high casualties could lead to further challenges for North Korean forces if the rate continues. Despite these setbacks, Ukraine claims that some North Korean soldiers captured were mistakenly believed to be on a human wave campaign, not fighting actively. The UK’s Ministry of Defense emphasized that while North Korean troops have achieved tactical gains in Kursk, they are struggling with interoperability issues due to language and command structures. North Korean forces had limited experience in major combat operations before deployment, having been trained in tactics, drone use, artillery, and trench-clearing. The White House noted that Pyongyang’s troops were initially used as expendable units but later faced harsh realities on the battlefield. While some believe the North Koreans are well-disciplined and capable, Ukraine maintains they have demonstrated skill in combat despite their uncertain role in the conflict.
