North Korean Hackers Create Malware Apps for macOS

North Korean hackers have created malicious apps that bypassed Apple’s security systems on Mac computers. According to a report from Jamf Threat Labs, the apps were developed using Google’s Flutter platform and featured names such as “New Updates in Crypto Exchange” and “Runner.” However, they actually contained malware that made network requests to a domain linked to the North Korean regime.

When opened, the apps displayed either a basic minesweeper game or posed as a note-taking app. The malware allowed hackers to download additional malicious scripts, potentially giving them access to a victim’s computer. Apple has since revoked the apps’ signatures, making them appear as safe on macOS devices once downloaded unintentionally.

This latest threat highlights North Korea’s continued targeting of the crypto sector, which has already been exploited for billions of dollars through various scams and phishing emails. To protect your Mac, consider using malware protection software. For mobile devices, use two-factor authentication and a password management app, especially if you own or use crypto. Keep your crypto seed phrase safe by writing it down on paper and storing it in a secure physical location.
