A wounded North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk region has revealed that troops fighting on behalf of Moscow are suffering significant losses.
The soldier, who was conscripted at 17 and served for years, told interrogators that his unit suffered heavy casualties during an offensive. In a video posted online last week, the soldier described how he hid from fellow North Korean troops as they died, before being injured and captured two days later.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently shared a similar account of a young soldier who spoke of multiple fatalities among his comrades. The soldier claimed to have served in a reconnaissance unit but said none had been trained to use Russian military equipment.
The North Korean soldier also recounted being transported from their home country to Russia by cargo vessel and sleeper train, alongside around 100 other soldiers. Their claims suggest that Moscow may be keeping its involvement in the conflict with Ukraine secret.
The soldier’s testimonies come as tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to escalate.
