A partial solar eclipse captivated much of the northern hemisphere on Saturday, as the moon slipped between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow on parts of the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, and Africa.
The event, which occurred when the moon moved between the Earth and the sun, created a crescent-shaped sun. The best view was in the Northeastern United States, where people gathered to witness the spectacle.
From northern Europe to the northwestern coast of Africa, viewers were treated to the celestial show during late morning and early afternoon. Cloud cover did not spoil the view in Nuuk, Greenland, where nearly 90 percent of the sun was covered at its peak.
The next partial solar eclipse will occur in September, with the best view available in Australia. Meanwhile, people in Spain created their own filters to capture the moment, while others used specialized equipment at observatories like the Sonnenborgh Observatory in Utrecht, Netherlands.
