Northern Lights to Appear in US on Valentine’s Day

A rare opportunity for stargazers in the northern U.S. is set to occur on Friday, as the aurora borealis may be visible as far south as Michigan and Maine. The spectacle is thanks to a geomagnetic storm this week.

According to reports from Space.com, dark skies are essential for viewing the Northern Lights, which will likely be visible in Canada and Alaska as well. A fast-moving solar wind stream is sending an influx of colorful swirls into Earth’s magnetic field.

The aurora borealis occurs when solar winds or flares collide with atoms and molecules within our planet’s magnetic field. Stargazers should plan to view the lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., making for a perfect nightcap on Valentine’s Day, especially if you have already made dinner reservations.
