A minor geomagnetic storm is expected to bring the northern lights to several states in the US on Saturday night, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The aurora borealis will be visible in Alaska and Canada, with other states along the “view line” including Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
The lights are expected to appear between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, when it is dark outside. To maximize viewing opportunities, travelers should head as far north as possible, avoid light pollution, and find a high vantage point.
Photographers can also capture stunning images of the northern lights by using a wide-angle lens, a tripod for stability, and framing the lights with natural features like mountains or bodies of water.
The current solar maximum has led to increased auroral activity, with scientists estimating that the northern lights will hit a 500-year peak in 2024. Although the lights are generally visible in northern states, they can occasionally be seen as far south as Florida.
Viewers and photographers should check back for further updates on the weather forecast and any changes to the “view line” of visibility.
