Northern Lights to Appear Tuesday Night in Alaska and Canada

A mild aurora light show is expected to appear in the northernmost states on Tuesday night, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast. The predicted Kp index of 3 indicates “more auroral activity” that can be viewed from the right vantage point.

Tuesday’s forecast will primarily affect Alaska and Canada, with parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan also expected to view the spectacle. However, the lights are anticipated to weaken by Thursday, when the Kp index is predicted to reach 2.

To maximize viewing opportunities, experts recommend finding a dark location with minimal light pollution and traveling as far north as possible. National Geographic suggests using a wide-angle lens and tripod for photography, while also framing the display with natural features like mountains or bodies of water.

Recent solar activity has led to frequent northern lights appearances in American skies over the past year. The sun is currently in its “solar maximum” period, which typically lasts 11 years and increases the frequency of solar events that produce strong northern lights displays. Some forecasts have been exceptionally strong, with aurora sightings as far south as Florida in recent months.
