Northern Lights to Dazzle US East Coast from New York to Washington

A moderate geomagnetic storm, rated level 2 out of 5 by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), is expected on Thursday, potentially bringing the Northern Lights to parts of the US.

The SWPC warned that power grid fluctuations and voltage alarms may occur in high-latitude systems, while satellite orientation irregularities and increased drag on low-Earth orbit satellites are also possible.

However, scientists say that due to the storm, the Northern Lights may be visible as far south as New York, Wisconsin, and Washington state. This is a rare occurrence, with the SWPC rating level 2 storms as moderate but still significant space weather conditions.
