The northern lights are expected to be visible in more than a dozen US states this weekend, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting brighter-than-usual activity. According to NOAA, Sunday’s aurora borealis will have a Kp index of five, indicating increased movement away from the poles and resulting in heightened brightness.
The northern lights can be visible in Alaska and parts of Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. The best viewing conditions are expected on Monday as well, with a Kp index of four.
To spot the northern lights, head to areas away from city light pollution and find a spot pointing north between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Photographers can use a tripod and wide-angle lens to capture the best shots, while smartphone users can use night mode and avoid flash for improved results. The increased aurora borealis activity is part of a solar maximum, which is expected to continue through 2025 and into 2026.
