Northern Lights Visible in Kentucky as Geomagnetic Storm Hits

A powerful geomagnetic storm is expected to bring the Northern Lights to the southern United States, including parts of Kentucky, late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G3 level warning for the storm, which could make it visible as far south as Frankfort.

The storm was triggered by multiple magnetic eruptions on the Sun and is expected to cause disruptions in radio frequencies and satellite navigation systems. However, Americans in areas with clear skies, such as Chicago and Frankfort, will have a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

For optimal viewing, experts recommend finding a location away from city lights with a clear view of the northern horizon. With a few seconds’ exposure, the aurora can be captured on camera. The most vivid sightings are expected to occur over the Rocky Mountains and Western U.S., just before sunrise.
