The northern lights are expected to be visible in a handful of northern states this week, including Oregon. A “view line” for Tuesday’s aurora forecast is along the northeast border of Oregon, where the magnetic activity from the sun has increased since the beginning of solar maximum, an approximately 11-year cycle.
The solar maximum will last into 2026 and provide opportunities to see auroras in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The northern lights could also be visible Tuesday night in parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Alaska.
To view the northern lights, it’s essential to stay away from light pollution and look towards the northern horizon. The Space Weather Prediction Center provides a 30-minute aurora forecast, which can be followed to see the latest predictions of where the lights will be visible.
