A rare astronomical event is expected to occur over Wisconsin on Monday and Tuesday nights, with the northern lights potentially visible across parts of the state. According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the northern lights may be seen as far south as central Wisconsin.
The Kp index forecast indicates that auroral activity will increase on both days, with Monday’s forecast showing a higher index (4) and Tuesday’s forecast (3). This means the lights are expected to become brighter and more active.
Weather conditions in northern Wisconsin look chilly, with temperatures ranging from 0-4 degrees Fahrenheit. In contrast, southern areas may experience mostly cloudy skies with low temperatures of around 0 degrees.
If you’re planning to witness the northern lights, head to one of these prime viewing locations:
* Newport State Park
* Driftless Region
* Harrington Beach State Park
* Kettle Moraine State Forest
* Kohler-Andrae State Park
* Parnell Tower
For optimal viewing conditions, look for the northern lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., away from city lights and at higher elevations.
The northern lights are caused by the collision of electrically charged particles with atmospheric molecules, resulting in the release of light energy as they return to their normal state.
