Northern Lights Visible Tonight in 13 US States

A minor geomagnetic storm is predicted to produce auroras in more than a dozen US states, including Washington, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasted the storm, which could make the northern lights appear especially vibrant due to the current phase of the moon.

The best viewing times will be between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., according to NOAA. To get the best view, it’s recommended to travel away from city lights and find the darkest location possible. Smartphones and digital cameras can also capture the light shows even if they’re not visible to the naked eye.

This week’s moon phase will make the night sky appear even darker, increasing the chances of spotting the northern lights. Aurorasaurus, a citizen science platform, allows users to sign up for real-time alerts of northern lights sightings based on user reports.
