Northwest Naturals has issued a voluntary recall of its raw and frozen cat food due to possible contamination with the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The company, after learning that a house cat had died from the virus after eating the contaminated food, is taking proactive steps to protect its customers.
According to Oregon Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz, the cat in question was an indoor pet and did not contract the virus through exposure outside. This suggests that the contamination occurred during processing or handling of the raw food.
The affected product is Northwest Naturals 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw & frozen pet food with best by dates 05/21/2026 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1. The recall affects products sold in 13 states, including Ohio.
Consumers who purchased the recalled food are advised to immediately discard it and contact the place of purchase for a refund. All affected products have been removed from store shelves by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
