Norway Releases Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea Cable Damage

A Norwegian cargo ship, the Silver Dania, has been released from custody after authorities found no link to a damaged Baltic Sea telecoms cable. The crew was from Russia and had been seized at the request of Latvia’s authorities. However, Swedish police have investigated another ship, the Maltese-flagged Vezhen, which they suspect may have caused the damage.

The Vezhen’s operator has denied malicious intent, saying it might have struck the cable with its anchor. The incident is part of a string of power outages and disruptions in the Baltic Sea region since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

NATO has increased its presence in the area with additional military assets, heightening tensions. An investigation into the damage continues, with no findings linking the Silver Dania to the act.
