A former Olympic medalist has died after being struck by lightning during a skiing trip in Norway. Audun Groenvold, 49, was a member of Norway’s Alpine skiing team before transitioning to ski cross. He won bronze medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2005 world championships, as well as an overall ski cross cup title in 2007. The Norwegian Ski Federation announced his passing on Wednesday, citing injuries sustained from the lightning strike as the cause of death. Groenvold had a long career in skiing, competing internationally from the age of three and earning World Cup points before retiring to become a national team coach and TV commentator. His passing has left a significant void for Norwegian skiing communities.
