Norwegian Ski Cross Medalist Audun Grønvold Dies After Lightning Strike

Audun Grønvold, a 2010 Olympic ski cross medalist, has died after being struck by lightning during a cabin trip. The Norwegian ski federation announced his death on Wednesday, stating that Grønvold, 49, was quickly taken to hospital and received treatment for the injuries but unfortunately succumbed to them.

A former national alpine skier and ski cross athlete, Grønvold won bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games and had a successful career with one podium finish in World Cup alpine skiing. He also claimed several titles in ski cross, including the overall cup in 2007.

Grønvold’s wife, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, described him as her “great love and best friend” for 20 years, adding that the accident occurred during their summer vacation. The Norwegian skiing community has lost a prominent figure, according to federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug, who stated that Grønvold’s death creates a “huge void”.
