Nosferatu Remake’s Ratty Problem Leaves Director Regretful

The upcoming vampire horror movie Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers, has made headlines for its unconventional use of rats in the production. Initially touted as a clever solution to achieve realistic on-set effects, it has since been revealed that the 5,000 well-trained rats were not just mere props, but living creatures with a smell that “is insane.”

Eggers recently admitted during an exclusive Q&A screening that he was unaware of the rats’ incontinence issue. The film’s use of practical effects, while sometimes praised for their authenticity, has led to this unexpected challenge.

The movie, a remake of the 1922 silent film and based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, tells the story of a young woman haunted by an ancient Transylvanian vampire in 19th-century Germany. The cast includes Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.

Despite the ratty mishap, fans can look forward to the film’s release on December 25 in the US and January 1 in the UK.
