Nothing has officially launched its Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro series, promising a 6-year update cycle with Android upgrades lasting only 3 years. The move is distinct from other brands like Google, Samsung, and Honor, which offer extended upgrade guarantees.
The Phone (3a) starts at $379 and offers a solid setup for its price point. It features a unique design, clean software, and the Glyph interface. An updated model includes an “Essential key” space for notes and ideas.
While Nothing’s approach is new, splitting OS upgrades from security updates isn’t unusual. Google previously offered 5 years of Android upgrades but only 3 years of OS upgrades. Samsung offers 6 years of both security and OS updates on its mid-range Galaxy A-series devices.
As a budget-oriented device, the Phone (3a) series likely aims to balance update lifespan with specs. However, users may find it disappointing that the company is not providing more Android upgrades.
The Phone (3a) launches with Android 15 and will be supported through Android 18. The series starts shipping later this month.
