A notorious cybercriminal group, known as “Scattered Spider,” is targeting airlines in the United States, according to the FBI. The group was behind June hacks of multiple airlines in the US and Canada. They are known for their aggressive tactics, including extortion and embarrassment.
Once inside a victim’s network, Scattered Spider steals sensitive data and deploys ransomware. The agency warns that anyone within affected airlines’ systems, including vendors and contractors, is at risk. While airline safety has not been compromised, the FBI is working with aviation partners to address the issue and assist victims.
Hawaiian Airlines and WestJet have confirmed recent cyberattacks without naming the perpetrators. Scattered Spider has previously targeted companies in the insurance and retail sectors. The FBI is urging caution as it investigates this new threat.
