Notre Dame has named redshirt freshman CJ Carr its starting quarterback, beating out sophomore Kenny Minchey in the competition. The decision comes after a relatively even contest for the job. With his grandfather being former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, CJ Carr will make his first career start at Miami on August 31.
A former ESPN 300 recruit, Carr made one brief appearance last season at Purdue in September. He replaces veteran Riley Leonard, who helped lead the Irish to the national championship game last season.
According to Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, protecting young quarterbacks is key to their success. “You can’t put too much on that person’s plate too early,” he said. “We have to be able to protect them in the run and pass game, help them make quick decisions, and play well on defense.” This approach aims to ensure Carr makes a smooth transition to starting quarterback.
