Novak Djokovic Apologized To After TV Interview Decline at Australian Open

Novak Djokovic declined a post-match on court interview after Australian Open match due to comments made by Channel 9 sports journalist Tony Jones. Jones called the 24-time Grand Slam champion overrated and a has-been, with an apparent reference to his 2022 deportation from Australia for being unvaccinated against COVID-19. Djokovic said he wanted an apology from Channel 9 and Jones.

Australian Network Nine issued a statement apologizing to Djokovic “for any offense caused by comments made during a recent live cross.” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley was also spoken to about the issue, with Djokovic stating he felt his deportation was a concern. The incident has sparked debate over free speech and sports media responsibility.

Djokovic is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, despite expressing frustration with Channel 9’s handling of the situation. The Serbian Ambassador to Australia described Jones’ comments as “clearly unprofessional” and said they could not be considered in good humor due to their reference to Djokovic’s deportation.
