Paramount’s action-comedy Novocaine easily topped the domestic chart, opening to $8.7 million and leaving Mickey 17 in its wake. The film stars Jack Quaid as a new kind of action hero who can’t take a punch but can dish one out. Despite initial expectations of $10 million, the movie fell short.
Other films, including Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag and Warner Bros.’ Mickey 17, trailed behind with around $7.5 million each. The domestic box office revenue for the weekend was estimated at $54.7 million, the lowest to date in 2025. Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World remained steady in its fifth weekend, while Looney Tunes Movie: The Day the Earth Stood Still and indie film The Last Supper rounded out the top five.
Industry experts say this slow start is not unprecedented, with Paul Degarabedian describing it as a “normal” $50 million range domestic weekend. He believes that the upcoming release of Snow White and A Minecraft Movie will bring some much-needed excitement to the box office.
