Nvidia, AMD to Sell AI Chips in China Despite US Restrictions

US chipmakers Nvidia and AMD plan to sell new GPUs designed for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads in China, despite restrictions on exporting advanced semiconductor technology to the country. The move comes after Nvidia incurred a $4.5 billion charge in Q1 due to licensing requirements impacting its ability to sell its H20 AI chip to companies in China.

Nvidia will sell a stripped-down AI GPU, code-named “B20,” while AMD is targeting AI workload needs with its new Radeon AI PRO R9700 workstation GPU. The companies are expected to start selling these chips in China from July. Nvidia’s budget AI chip built on its Blackwell architecture is also planned for the Chinese market, priced at $6,500 to $8,000.

The move comes as US restrictions on exporting advanced semiconductor technology to China continue. Despite this, Nvidia and AMD aim to capitalize on the growing demand for AI solutions in the region.
