Nvidia and Anthropic are at odds over artificial intelligence policy as US chip export restrictions set to take effect on May 15. The restrictions aim to prevent rival nations like China from gaining ground in the escalating AI arms race.
Anthropic, backed by billions from Amazon, claims Chinese smuggling tactics involve hiding chips in prosthetic baby bumps or packing them alongside live lobsters. However, Nvidia has dismissed these claims as “tall tales” and argues that policy should focus on innovation rather than limiting competitiveness.
The company’s CEO, Jensen Huang, recently met with Chinese trade officials and praised Huawei as a top global tech company, stating they have made significant progress in computing and network technology. Anthropic is calling for tighter controls and enforcement to secure America’s lead in AI development, citing the importance of compute access as the key strategic chokepoint.
The US policy aims to maintain America’s compute advantage through export controls, which could impact Nvidia’s overseas business and revenue from chip sales. The situation has added uncertainty to the already contentious policy, with President Donald Trump reportedly working on updating these restrictions.
