Nvidia has confirmed that a rare issue with defective silicon led to several GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs having fewer ROPs than specified. The problem affects less than 0.5% of the RTX 5090 and 5090D, as well as the 5070 Ti models, resulting in an average graphical performance impact of 4%. Affected consumers can contact their board manufacturer for a replacement.
The issue is caused by defective GB202 and GB203 chips that passed inspection during production. Nvidia has stated that it has corrected the problem, but many gamers and enthusiasts are disappointed with the launch of the RTX 50 series due to performance issues and high price increases.
Other models, such as the RTX 4090, have not been confirmed to be affected. However, concerns remain about the stability and performance of these GPUs, which has led to crashes, instability, and BSODs. Nvidia is investigating these issues but has yet to release a timeline for fixes.
