In a surprising twist, Nvidia’s latest graphics card, the RTX 5070 Ti, has surpassed its predecessor, the GTX 1080 Ti, in benchmark performance. Released eight years ago, the GTX 1080 Ti was widely considered the best graphics card available at the time, boasting a top-end price of $700.
Fast-forward to today, and the RTX 5070 Ti is available for $750 or more, yet it delivers significantly better performance, with approximately two-to-three times the FPS in identical gaming tests. The RTX 5070 Ti’s ray tracing capabilities are also much improved, making it a better choice for modern games that utilize this technology.
However, the GTX 1080 Ti still holds its own at 1440p resolution with 2x upscaling and high graphical settings, managing to hit 60 frames per second in popular games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This makes it a suitable option for those who don’t need the latest and greatest technology.
For gamers who invested in the GTX 1080 Ti seven or eight years ago and can still get decent performance, there’s no compelling reason to upgrade to the newer RTX 5070 Ti. The Full Nerd podcast and PCWorld’s YouTube channel offer regular comparisons and discussions on graphics cards for those interested in staying up-to-date with the latest developments.
