Nvidia surpassed Microsoft on Tuesday with a market cap of $3.45 trillion, reclaiming its title as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company. The artificial intelligence chipmaker saw its shares rise 3% to $141.40, driven by strong quarterly earnings and continued demand for its AI chips.
Nvidia’s growth is attributed to its AI-enabled products, which are used by top tech companies like OpenAI for ChatGPT development. Microsoft and Apple have been trading places with Nvidia at the top of the market cap ranks since June, but Nvidia has now regained its lead.
The company reported 96 cents in adjusted earnings per share on $44.06 billion in sales during its fiscal first quarter, representing a 69% growth rate. This growth is fueled by the increasing demand for AI chips from companies like Google, Amazon, and Oracle, which are building massive clusters of computers to enhance their AI capabilities.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 as a gaming chip manufacturer but has since expanded into high-performance computing and AI with its innovative chip designs that can handle parallel processing tasks efficiently.
