Nvidia has updated its list of supported GPUs for small form factor (SFF) builds, with the RTX 5090 Founders Edition being the only variant that meets the criteria. The new GPU lineup includes the Blackwell series, which was introduced last night.
To qualify as SFF-Ready, a graphics card must not be taller than 151mm, no longer than 304mm in length (including power cable bend radius), and no thicker than 50mm or have more than two PCIe slots. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition meets these specifications, with a length of 137mm, a height of 304mm, and a thickness of 40mm.
This makes the RTX 5090 Founders Edition the first and only 90-class flagship Nvidia GPU to fit within Nvidia’s SFF-Ready regulations. In contrast, previous-generation Ada Lovelace GPUs like the RTX 4090 were not compact enough to meet the criteria, while AIB partner cards based on the RTX 5090 did not qualify.
Nvidia’s updated design for the Founders Edition has enabled cooling performance improvements and reduced the cooler’s size compared to the RTX 4090. The new GPU features a more efficient double-flow-through cooler design and three-piece PCB, which allow it to provide sufficient cooling performance while maintaining a slim two-slot thickness.
The RTX 5090’s compact size makes it an attractive option for small form factor builds or those looking for a high-performance system with a “normal-sized” graphics card. The GPU is expected to launch alongside the RTX 50 series by the end of this month.
