NYC Congestion Pricing Toll May Rise 25% on Gridlock Alert Days

New York City’s congestion pricing plan, set to start on January 5, would allow the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to hike tolls by 25% on gridlock alert days. However, Governor Kathy Hochul has vowed not to let that happen.

Under the plan, drivers will be charged $9 to travel below 60th Street in Manhattan. On busier traffic days, prices could rise higher. The MTA has confirmed it reserves the right to charge an additional 25% during gridlock alert days, but the city Department of Transportation determines which day is a gridlock alert.

Hochul stated that she would not allow this discretionary surcharge on gridlock days. The move aims to address concerns over fairness and affordability among New Yorkers and visitors. While some see it as an opportunity to invest in infrastructure, others view it as an added expense during peak hours.

Some drivers expressed mixed views, with some welcoming the idea of less traffic and others worrying about increased costs. Hochul’s stance on the matter suggests she will prioritize public concerns, ensuring a smoother transition for all New Yorkers.
