New York health officials are urging pregnant women to get screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly congenital syphilis. While overall syphilis cases have decreased, primary and secondary rates among females increased by 800% over the last decade.
Congenital syphilis is a major concern as it can be transmitted from a mother to her fetus during pregnancy or birth. Early treatment before delivery can significantly reduce the risk of newborns developing syphilis or congenital syphilis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health recommend pregnant women screen for congenital syphilis three times during pregnancy. If left untreated, syphilis can cause serious damage to organs and even death.
Symptoms of syphilis may not be present in all cases, making it essential for women to get screened. Treatment with penicillin injections is available but requires prompt action to prevent long-term consequences.
