A suspect is still on the loose after fatally shooting Brian Thompson, the top executive of UnitedHealthcare, outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The 50-year-old was targeted in a pre-planned killing with no clear motive.
Police have gathered over 200 images of the suspect from his arrival in New York to his escape route, including two clear photos of him without his mask. They also found DNA evidence, such as a water bottle and candy wrapper, that may link him to the crime scene.
The suspect is believed to have arrived in New York 10 days before the shooting. Investigators think he took a bus from Atlanta, Georgia, and then checked into a hostel near Times Square. The suspect was wearing a black face mask and light brown jacket at the time of the shooting.
Police have released surveillance photos showing the gunman’s weapon had a suppressor, which may be linked to an old pistol used in World War II. They are visiting gun stores in Connecticut to try to track down where the firearm was purchased.
The suspect allegedly left behind bullet casings with cryptic messages, including “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” These words may be related to tactics used by insurance companies in the US healthcare system.
Thompson joined UnitedHealthcare in 2004 and became CEO in 2021. His wife previously mentioned that there had been threats against him earlier. Police are still searching for the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.
