NYC Outbreak: 58 Diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease, 2 Deaths Reported

A bacterial pneumonia outbreak has infected dozens in New York City, with a total of 58 people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. Two deaths have been reported. The cluster is concentrated in Central Harlem and surrounding areas.

Legionnaires’ disease is typically found in freshwater environments but can grow indoors via shower heads, sink faucets, and other water systems. Symptoms include flu-like symptoms such as cough, chills, muscle aches, fever, and difficulty breathing.

Those who have risk factors like smoking, chronic lung conditions, or compromised immune systems should be especially aware of their symptoms. Diagnosis is made through chest X-ray, urine test, and lab analysis. Most people recover with antibiotics, but serious cases can lead to lung failure or death.

To prevent infection, the CDC recommends using a water management program to reduce Legionella growth. Building owners should take steps to reduce risk. Experts emphasize the need for smokers to quit and supporting chronic pulmonary disease.

Group at highest risk includes: smokers, people 50+, those with chronic lung disease, and immunocompromised individuals. Mortality risk is 10% in general cases, rising to 25% in healthcare facilities.
