NYC Road Salt Shortage Hits Local Towns Hard

New York State’s road salt shortage has prompted several towns to seek supplies from local companies like Apalachee Salt. The company claims it was not awarded any contracts by the state and is now delivering salt to American Rock Salt, a major supplier of 30 counties. Ellen Pouthier, owner of Apalachee Salt, says the “Buy American Salt” Act has led to an unfair bidding process that benefits larger companies at the expense of local businesses like hers.

The act, signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022, allows for the purchase of salt from domestic mines at a premium price. However, Pouthier argues that this policy is not only harming local businesses but also putting people’s safety at risk, as many local workers are now working extended hours to meet demand.

American Rock Salt has refuted claims that the act is contributing to the current shortage, stating that the severe winter weather is to blame. Despite this, Pouthier says she wants to see the bidding process revaluated next season to ensure fairer competition for local businesses.
