NYPD Cracks Down on Congestion Pricing Evaders

New York City police are enforcing its new congestion pricing tolling program with a crackdown on motorists trying to bypass the system. One day after the program’s first full weekday began, 82 summonses were issued, including 29 for drivers who covered up parts of their license plates.

The NYPD is working with the MTA to stop drivers from using license plate obstructions, such as dirt or plastic coverings, to avoid paying the toll. Officers are also tracking down people driving the wrong way on one-way streets to collect revenue.

To expand enforcement, the NYC Department of Transportation and NYPD have proposed new rules. These rules establish clear visibility requirements for license plates, prohibiting anything that makes them unreadable or obscured. Failure to comply can result in a $50 fine.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has pledged to closely study data from the program to make changes as needed. Mayor Eric Adams will discuss the start of the congestion pricing program on Tuesday afternoon.

While some questions remain about whether the program will ease traffic and boost transit numbers, officials are committed to reviewing and adjusting the policy to achieve its goals.
