The Interborough Express (IBX), a proposed light-rail line connecting Queens and Brooklyn, has entered its design and engineering phase. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the project’s progress at a news conference, stating that it will create a 14-mile clean and fast transit option for 900,000 New Yorkers.
The line would stretch between Sunset Park in Brooklyn and Jackson Heights in Queens, with a projected travel time of 32 minutes. The plan includes 19 stations, connecting to over a dozen subway lines, 50 bus routes, and two Long Island Rail Road stations.
Funding for the project is secured through $45 million in New York state’s budget and the MTA’s Capital Plan, as well as $15 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The estimated cost is $5.5 billion.
This project marks a significant step towards creating a connection between Brooklyn and Queens. Governor Hochul emphasized that the goal is to bring people together, rather than just building infrastructure.
