New Zealand’s top diplomat to the UK has been sacked over remarks he made about US President Donald Trump at an event in London. Phil Goff, who is New Zealand’s high commissioner to the UK, questioned Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen about Trump’s actions and history.
The comments were made during a discussion on European security, but they drew criticism from officials, including Foreign Minister Winston Peters. Peters described the remarks as “disappointing” and said Goff’s position had become “untenable.” The foreign minister announced that officials would work with Goff to facilitate his return to New Zealand. However, former Prime Minister Helen Clark has criticized the decision, calling it a “very thin excuse” for removing a respected diplomat from his role.
