Oakland Mall Owner Sees Opportunity in Macy’s Store Closure

The anticipated closure of Macy’s at Oakland Mall presents a chance for smaller businesses to shine. According to Jim Bennington, owner of Varcade PvP Arena, a virtual reality shooting lounge, he sees the store’s departure as an opportunity to bring unique experiences to his customers.

Macy’s Inc. confirmed that 66 stores across the country, including four in Michigan, will be closing by 2025. The company cited its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which involves focusing resources on underperforming stores and investing in customer-centric initiatives.

Instead of viewing the closure as a loss, Oakland Mall owner Mario Kiezi is optimistic about the future. He believes that unique stores like Varcade PvP Arena will help revitalize the mall and bring customers back. “The Oakland Mall is an institution,” Bennington said. “We can take its infrastructure and turn it inside out to keep it relevant in the community.”
