Oakmont’s Torment: Even World No. 1 Falters on Demanding Course

The Muirfield Village Golf Club may have been Scottie Scheffler’s happy hunting ground just two weeks ago, but a different beast emerged at Oakmont Country Club this weekend. The No. 1 golfer in the world faced his toughest test yet as the challenging course proved too much for even the best players.

Oakmont is notorious for its treacherous conditions, with deep rough and thin fairways that demand precision shot-making. The greens are equally daunting, with a seemingly endless supply of twists, turns, and bumps. Even Scheffler, who won the PGA Championship last year, was left frustrated as he struggled to navigate these obstacles.

Scheffler’s day began promisingly, but quickly turned sour as the course took its toll. He recovered from one wayward shot with a remarkable up-and-down on the 12th hole, only to succumb to bogey woes on 13 and 15. “The golf course is just challenging,” he admitted.

Others in the field fared no better. Thomas Detry warned that the course’s relentless pressure can lead to mistakes, while Shane Lowry and Patrick Reed notched impressive eagles, but Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, and Bryson DeChambeau all suffered costly mistakes.

For some players, like Kim Si-woo and JJ Spaun, the course proved too much. Even Jon Rahm, a major champion, celebrated staying under par. As the tournament narrows to the top 60 players who make the cut, Oakmont’s torment continues.
