Bethesda has finally brought back the classic 2006 open-world RPG, Oblivion, with its highly anticipated remaster. The game is now available for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, priced at $49.99.
Developed by Virtuos, a studio behind Dark Souls: Remastered, the Oblivion Remastered uses Unreal Engine 5 to give the game a high-resolution makeover with improved lighting and textures. The UI and leveling system have also been updated to be closer to modern RPGs.
Gameplay changes include more realistic enemy combat animations, sound, and visual effects, as well as a new sprint button. Bethesda’s external projects director Tom Mustaine stated that while the game has been modernized, it still retains its original charm and carefully crafted world.
However, there are some lingering questions about mod support and whether existing Oblivion mods can be transferred to the remaster. The company hasn’t confirmed if the new version will be as easily moddable as the original.
