Des Longstaff, 39, was diagnosed with stage four oesophageal cancer after struggling to swallow a sandwich. The cancer had spread to his liver, but he’s seeking alternative treatments in Germany. With a GoFundMe campaign already collecting £31,000 towards €52,000 treatment costs, Des remains hopeful about his chances of survival.
Des, a landscape contractor, noticed the problem while eating a bacon and sausage sandwich with his friend. He tried to swallow it but felt something was lodged in his oesophagus. After visiting a doctor, an endoscopy revealed a 35cm tumour in his lower oesophagus. Despite initial hopes for keyhole surgery, further scans showed the cancer had spread to his liver.
Des is now undergoing immunotherapy and another form of chemotherapy to help his body fight the disease. However, he acknowledges that these treatments are not curative. His mother has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for treatment in Germany, where Des hopes to receive specialised care that can target the cancerous cells in his liver.
Des is determined to prolong his time with his five-year-old son and remains optimistic about his medical approach. He believes that German treatment plans are more effective and that he’s not terminal. With a targeted amount of £43,000 raised so far, Des is one step closer to getting the help he needs to fight his oesophageal cancer.
