Ohio Farmers Battle Bird Flu Outbreak Amid Biosecurity Concerns

Ohio’s egg, chicken, and turkey farmers are taking steps to prevent the spread of bird flu as cases pop up across the state. The Ohio Poultry Association is urging owners to maintain high biosecurity measures, including limiting visitors and vehicles on farms.

The H5N1 strain of the virus is being transmitted through migrating waterfowl and susceptible local birds, according to experts. However, poultry leaders emphasize that consuming safely handled and cooked meat or eggs poses a low risk to public health.

Farmers in affected areas are working closely with federal and state officials to implement emergency measures and prevent further spread. The USDA and FDA have confirmed that HPAI cannot be transmitted through safely handled food products, providing some reassurance to the industry.
