A measles case has been detected in Ashtabula County, marking the first reported case in Ohio for 2025. This new diagnosis is a concern given that vaccination rates have remained low recently. The last reported cases were recorded in 2022 (90) with only one case in 2023 and seven cases in 2024.
According to Dr. Vanderhoff, fully vaccinated individuals are the key to preventing measles, as it is an extremely contagious disease spread through coughing and sneezing. While rare, measles can be fatal. Dr. Vanderhoff emphasizes the importance of vaccination in protecting oneself and children from this preventable disease.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) consider measles eliminated in the US since 2000 due to widespread vaccination efforts. Symptoms include a rash, fever, runny nose, loss of appetite, and red eyes, typically lasting 5-6 days and starting at the hairline.
