Ohio Reports First Pediatric Flu Death This Season

Ohio has reported its first pediatric flu death in under 18 years, according to the state Department of Health. The child died in Allen County, northwest Ohio, during the worst flu season in 15 years.

Flu activity peaked between December and February but has been increasing steadily since early December, with current levels classified as “very high.” Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, director of the department, warned parents to protect their children by getting them vaccinated. “It’s not too late for parents and kids to get a flu vaccine,” he said.

Since the start of the season, over 9,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported in Ohio, exceeding the five-year average at this point. While one pediatric death is expected per season, this year’s outbreak has been more severe.

Flu vaccines are widely available at healthcare providers’, local health departments, and retail pharmacies. Preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, using hand sanitizer, and covering coughs and sneezes can also help contain the spread of influenza.
