Oklahoma City Grocery Stores Limit Egg Purchases Amid Nationwide Shortage

Egg prices are rising due to a nationwide shortage caused by the avian flu, prompting major grocery store companies to limit egg purchases.

Companies such as Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club, Costco, and Sprouts are setting limits on egg sales in an effort to protect their inventories. The limits vary by location, but most stores are restricting customers to one or two packages per day.

Trader Joe’s is limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer per day, while Walmart is only allowing the purchase of 60-count carton eggs every other week. Sam’s Club and Sprouts have implemented similar restrictions.

Aldi has posted signs in some locations limiting purchases to two dozen eggs, but it’s unclear if this policy applies nationwide. Costco is also limiting egg purchases, restricting customers to three packages per shopping trip.

The avian flu has been found in over 145 million birds in 618 counties across the country, resulting in the deaths of approximately 17.2 million egg-laying hens. The shortage has led to higher prices for eggs nationwide, with experts attributing it to the bird flu outbreak.
