John Mateer, a No. 1 overall player in ESPN’s transfer rankings, has committed to Oklahoma after a breakout season as the starter at Washington State University. The 6-foot-1 quarterback threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns on 64.6% passing, ranking sixth among quarterbacks with 826 rushing yards.
Mateer joins the Sooners after coach Jake Dickert’s departure to Wake Forest, where he accepted a new job. He will have two more seasons of eligibility and resolves Oklahoma’s need for a starting quarterback after Jackson Arnold opted to transfer to Auburn.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables hired new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle earlier this month, aiming to revamp the team’s offense. Mateer’s addition is seen as a significant boost to the program, with Dickert predicting he will be the “best player in the country” next year.
The Sooners had been considered the favorite to land Mateer after hiring Arbuckle, and Oklahoma held off a push from Miami to secure his pledge. They face Navy in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on December 27.
