Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in Divorce Comedy ‘The War of the Roses’

Oscar-nominated actors Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star as Ivy and Theo, two high-achieving professionals whose marriage becomes toxic and tumultuous. The film is an adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel, with a new script by Tony McNamara and direction by Jay Roach.

Colman and Cumberbatch bring their acting skills to the screen, but struggle to convey the depth of their characters’ emotions in a way that feels authentic. Despite their efforts, it’s difficult to believe they truly love or hate each other, which undermines the film’s tone. The movie also tones down some of the original novel’s themes about women sacrificing careers and family status.

In this version, Ivy is a successful chef, while Theo is an architect whose career collapses, making him stay home with their children while Ivy becomes a celebrated foodie. She despises her husband’s attitude towards his failed designs, which adds to their marital tensions. The plot takes an unexpected turn when the kids are pressured into leaving school early for athletic pursuits, but this contrivance feels unconvincing.

The film has its moments of humor, with great lines from Colman and Cumberbatch, including one where Theo says “When we were younger, I knew what she was going to say before she said it.” However, the acting often veers into angry or drunk territory without adding much depth. The supporting cast, including Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, are underutilized in their comedic roles.

The movie’s polished production values give it a glossy finish, but it misses out on capturing the tragicomic reality of a bad marriage. Despite its flaws, ‘The War of the Roses’ remains an entertaining, if unfulfilling, watch for fans of Colman and Cumberbatch.
