Hulu and Freeform are in talks for a new season of the drama series “Cruel Summer”, with original star Olivia Holt set to reprise her role as Kate Wallis. The third installment is currently in development, with Lionsgate TV on board as the studio and executive producers Cori Uchida and Adam Lash at the helm. This marks a departure from last season’s anthology format, which received mixed reviews.
The show’s cancellation in 2023 after two seasons was met with disappointment from fans, but it appears that Hulu and Freeform are giving it another chance. Michelle Purple and Jessica Biel will once again serve as executive producers through Iron Ocean.
“Cruel Summer” initially premiered to critical acclaim, focusing on the disappearance of Kate Wallis and the subsequent accusations against Jeanette Turner. The show’s timeline stretched across three summers, exploring themes of friendship, guilt, and redemption.
Since her appearance in “Cruel Summer”, Olivia Holt has continued to work in television and theater, including roles in “Heart Eyes” and a Broadway debut with “Chicago”. Fans can look forward to seeing her return to the series as Kate Wallis in the upcoming third season.
